Why “Truman Show” is one of the greatest metaphors for Self-Investigation.
Spoiler: This is a speed-run through the plot. If you have not watched Truman Show yet, please consider doing so and returning to this later.
Part 1: Ignorance Is Bliss
Truman lives a relatively comfortably life. He is completely “bought-in” to the way the world works – even though he is misled far more than he realizes. Although he harbors a nagging curiosity about life, he goes about his business not really questioning anything.

Part 2: Fleeing the Familiar
Eventually Truman suspects something’s wrong – everything he believed turned out to be a trick or misunderstanding.
Trusting nobody, and desperate for answers, he hops aboard a sailboat and heads out into the ocean alone. Destination? Unknown. But at least he may discover something new – something real.
Initially, he encounters a terrible storm which nearly kills him.

Part 3: Recognizing Illusions
The storm calms. Truman survives.
Suddenly, his sailboat smashes into a fake horizon.
He is flabbergasted. This is the most damning proof that his reality was a big trick: his boat crashes into a fake sky – he touches it with his bare hand, in total disbelief and awe…

Part 4: Digging Deeper
He finds a staircase leading to an exit door.
Literally like the prisoner escaping Plato’s cave of shadows, Truman ascends a staircase toward a greater sense of truth – the world beyond his world.

Part 5: Self-Transcendence
The point of no return. He walks through the door.
Truman still doesn’t know what awaits him. He still doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. But he is now irrevocably convinced of his illusions and limitations, and commits to moving beyond them for good.
