Often in this practice of “Self-Investigation”, we are asked to examine parts of ourselves – such as identity, desires, and habits – and let them go.
In more extreme cases, we are told these aspects of ourselves are an outright illusion – that “there is no self”.
While aspects of our minds and identities are illusory, taking this too literally can lead to distress and confusion.
A middle ground both recognizes the fluid, fallible nature of selfhood and affirms aspects that feel authentic and integral to a rich human life.
Jessica Eve has considered this middle ground for over a decade and specializes in helping people find balance when self-negation leads to trouble.
Below we discuss how anyone might find a reasonable path.
